The single-use content trap (and how to fix it)

Hi Reader,

Most companies treat testimonials like trash (and that is a shame).

They collect a 60-second clip, post it on LinkedIn, check the box, and move on.

To be fair, most marketing these days is considered single-use. But just like with a disposable coffee cup - it’s a waste.

You can get a lot more out of your client stories. And more still when you gather a bunch of them at once. When you capture 4, 5, 12, 20+ stakeholder stories the real value isn't just the video clips.

It’s the pattern recognition.

When you analyze a high volume of client, donor, or user interviews at once, you aren’t just making marketing assets. You’re running an automated focus group.

And that kind of client story collaboration can uncover:

  • Consistent Language: The exact words happiest clients use to describe their breakthrough moment (so you can paste them straight into your marketing collateral).
  • Real Objections: The hesitations that almost stopped them from buying, giving your sales team a clear blueprint to overcome doubts. If you see the same ones coming up over and over - address it on the front end.
  • Unseen Value Signals: Features or benefits your internal team takes for granted, but your clients consider reasons to buy (or stay).
  • Standardized Messaging Cues: Repeated themes that align your product, sales, and marketing teams.

My Real-World Example

I have pulled a fair number of testimonials for my own business and the latest batch had a bit of a surprise. I expected my clients to be impressed with the kit, video quality, storytelling or some other video-creator-centric characteristic.

Do you know what my clients liked best?

My online information sharing/project management system.

That's right: easy, smooth operations. That's what mattered most to my clients. And outside of bruising my artistic ego, it's a huge insight - because it's what actually matters to my best clients.

Don't just collect testimonials to show off happy faces. Collect them in volume to uncover the core messaging that actually drives your revenue.

Do you have a backlog of raw client interviews, Zoom calls, or past testimonials sitting in a folder?

Reply to this email and let's talk about analyzing those to tease out the reason you resonate with your clients.

Best,
Neil

Hi Reader, A week ago, I put out a simple framework for business leaders struggling with content bandwidth: Stop overthinking it. The core premise was simple: 95% of the effort that goes into your marketing content is already happening inside your business. You and your team are solving complex operational problems, securing glowing client feedback, and running high-value meetings every day. The insight exists. You don't need to manufacture content from scratch; you just need to capture what...

You left something important behind.

You just need to capture the value you’ve already created. Every week, you and your team are: Solving complex operational problems for your clients Getting glowing verbal feedback on phone calls Hosting high-value events and stakeholder meetings That is 95% of the effort. But if those moments stay locked in a Zoom call or hallway conversation, you're...

vidKit v3.1 for use at events and non-profit galas.

Hi Reader, If you run a non-profit gala, a startup cohort graduation, or an industry conference, you know the impact your organization creates. You also know how vital it is to capture that impact, and how hard it can be to actually execute. Your event is the single best time to gather authentic feedback, but hiring a full video production crew often swallows the budget and creates on-site disruption. And a post-event survey email simply won't capture the raw emotion of the day. Over the past...
